This unusual building was designed to look like an ocean liner and was once the headquarters of Coca Cola’s bottling operations. Helping the building look like a ship are various design add-ons such as portholes, cargo doors, and a large bridge on top. To construct the building, four other buildings on the site had to be remodeled to fit in with the ship plans. The huge edifice was built in 1937 and designed by architect Robert V. Derrah; today, it still stands as one of L.A.’s most famous buildings.  Architect Derrah created this manufactory for Coca-Cola right around the same time he designed Crossroads ofRead More →

A young couple with two children from Mexico City who after living in a conventional home wanted to change to one integrated to nature. This amazing house was build in 2006 by Arquitectura Orgánica. The goal of this project was to make it feel like an internal inhabitant of a snail, like a mollusk moving from one chamber to another, like a symbiotic dweller of a huge fossil maternal cloister.  It’s more of a sculpture than a dwelling. Taking cues from a Nautilus shell, the house is put together using ferrocement construction, a technique involving a frame of steel-reinforced chicken wire with a special two-inch-thickRead More →

Sou Fujimoto, a Japanese architect, designed this small and primitive house to showcase the versatility of lumber. By using large beams that are 350mm sqaure, walls, ceiling, floors and nooks are created. The design of stepped space was a long time fascination of the designer – its defining characteristics of a sort of spatial relativity can not be achieved using coplanar floors. Lumber is extremely versatile. In an ordinary wooden architecture, lumber is effectively differentiated according to functions in various localities precisely because it is so versatile. Columns, beams, foundations, exterior walls, interior walls, ceilings, floorings, insulations, furnishings, stairs, window frames, meaning all. There areRead More →

Certainly one of the most radical boat designs I’ve ever seen. The two companies unveiled a real-size model of the 38-metre wide vessel late last month in Ancona, Italy. Unusually the width of the yacht is almost two thirds of its 190ft length. Instead of a traditional tapered stern, the WHY has a sheared off appearance, with a 30metre ‘beach’ running along the back. This gives access to a naturally-lit spa, that includes a traditional Turkish Hammam.   It’s not like the usual stern of a boat, it’s more like the real beach of an island; a beach which is protected from the wind and theRead More →
