This unusual building was designed to look like an ocean liner and was once the headquarters of Coca Cola’s bottling operations. Helping the building look like a ship are various design add-ons such as portholes, cargo doors, and a large bridge on top. To construct the building, four other buildings on the site had to be remodeled to fit in with the ship plans. The huge edifice was built in 1937 and designed by architect Robert V. Derrah; today, it still stands as one of L.A.’s most famous buildings.  Architect Derrah created this manufactory for Coca-Cola right around the same time he designed Crossroads of the World, also ship-shaped, on Sunset. For this landmark Coke plant, Derrah built the project around a handful of existing buildings, including the company’s 1927 plant, so I reckon it’s more of a re-design. Streamline Moderne in design, it’s got all the boat things, with portholes, catwalk, promenade deck, hatches, rivets, and the confounded bridge.

At a length of 361 meters, the Allure of the Seas is almost four American football fields long. It has a beam that is 66 meters long and its height from sea level 72 meters. The gross weight of the vessel will be 225,000 tons. At full capacity, the Allure of the Seas will accommodate 6,320 passengers and a crew of 2,100. It will have 16 passenger decks and 2,704 cabins. The brand new sister ship of the world’s largest cruise liner narrowly passed under a Danish bridge Saturday, a feat that required smooth seas and adjustable smokestacks, officials said. Ship  measures around four football fields and accommodates 8,300 people, including crew members. The cruise liner measures 1,200 feet from bow to stern, and its height from sea level is 236 feet. Aside from a two-deck high dance hall, a 1,380-seat theater and an ice skating rink, a number of pools, spas, gyms, it also houses bars, restaurants and cafes as well as a shopping street with a park with trees. A brand new featureis the H2O Zone, or the “sprayground” which has colorful fiberglass sculptures shooting jets of water, geysers shooting from the ground and water cannons. There’s even a lazy river and waterfall inside! At night, this area, with the integration of an incredible lighting system, will be transformed into a sculpture garden. Royal Caribbean says, “there’s nothing like the H2O Zone on any other cruise ship today.”  The Allure of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship under construction is nearing completion in Turku, Finland. By the end of October 2010, it will be delivered to Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. and will make its maiden voyage in December 2010.
